Finally after a long wait, the eggs have hatched. We counted 6 Goslings but unfortunately only 3 have survived. The 3 remaining babies are doing well and are getting bigger everyday. They are enjoying daily walks in the field with their proud parents. We will keep you updated on their progress.

I was lucky enough to have spotted this beautiful Tawny Owl having a dose in the tree. At least I know that I don't need to go to Specsavers just yet!

Our two geese Peter Pan and Tinkerbell the second have arrived back at Lower Willsworthy. Unfortunately last year Tinkerbell, we think got egg bound and sadly died. This year however, Peter Pan has returned with a new mate and they have setup home on Ducky Island. Tinkerbell has not left her nest, so fingers crossed she has laid her eggs and is waiting for them to hatch.

Winter short break on Dartmoor 5/5 Stayed Feb 2019 Elena B. Firstly, thanks to the owners, Mike & Sophia, for friendly and efficient communication while booking our stay. When we arrived, Sophia was there to meet us and welcomed us warmly before showing us around the grounds and cottage. The cottage is next to their house with a great outlook over the fields and moors but doesn't feel overlooked. Sophia assured us that if there was anything we needed, just to knock on their door.
Inside the cottage, the most delicious scones plus jam and clotted cream awaited us, plus eggs from their hens. A comprehensive information pack including walking maps, local restaurants/pubs and other local information was really helpful.
The cottage is warm, clean and spacious, with comfortable beds, great views and a cosy lounge complete with wood burner (ideal for curling up with a book after a snowy walk!) The ducks and hens in the yard below kept us entertained while doing the washing up!
We loved the walk up onto the moors from the cottage - a real mix of beautiful wooded river walks, ancient fields and open moorland. We walked to Gnat Tor and Baggator, and also enjoyed walks further afield at Grenofen and Burrator.
Food-wise, we had a wonderful lunch at the Cornish Arms in Tavistock - definitely recommended.
Thanks again to Mike & Sophia for creating such a lovely peaceful place. Look forward to coming back in warmer weather as the outside areas looked amazing.

Even better than I remembered! Date of Stay 31 Mar 2018 Returning to Lower Willsworthy for an Easter break we have been overwhelmed by the warm and friendly welcome , Mike and Sophie are perfect hosts- attentive and helpful but not over bearing. The cottage is immaculate and beautifully appointed with every modern comfort- staying there with our two young children there is plenty of space and they absolutely adore the gardens and being able to see the horses, cattle and even deer grazing in the fields! Lower Willsworthy is ideally located for exploring Dartmoor and the Tamar Valley and we enjoyed days out at Tavy Cleave, Lydford , Wembury beach and Cotehele. Thanks again, we hope to see you very soon!

Our two resident Canadian geese have returned. Peter Pan and Tinkerbell set up residence here a few years ago and raised their family on the lake. Unfortunately they didn't return for the following few years but this year it would appear that the female, Tinkerbell, is nesting on Ducky Island! Watch this space.....

Thank you to our lovely guests all the way from Colorado, for this lovely write up:
Not only were Mike and Sophie great hosts, but the cottage was perfect for our visit to West Devon. We were able to navigate the area with no trouble even though we are not accustomed to single track roads. The cottage was superb with plenty of room and a cozy little wood stove fireplace that warmed us in the brisk evenings. Views out the windows of the cottage were stunning.

A lovely review!
"We first found this gem of a cottage on the edge of Dartmoor 3 years ago. We have just returned from our 6th visit and are looking forward to our return in June.
Mike and Sophie work very hard to ensure that you have a wonderful holiday from start to finish. Sophies delicious homemade cakes and the basket of goodies on arrival are a welcome treat after a long journey and the cottage is very cosy and comfortable with fabulous views across the paddocks to the moor. The pretty garden with its stream running through it is a lovely place to relax whatever the time of year and a 10 minute stroll past the lake and across the paddocks will lead you to the River Tavy and its magical woodland.
Set in such a stunning rural location means you can take numerous walks all day from the door without ever needing to use the car. However should you need to venture out then Tavistock is a 15 minute drive away with all the facilities you could possibly need. Nearby Lydford Gorge which is owned by the National Trust is well worth a visit with its walkways and beautiful waterfalls especially after heavy rain and the tea room serves up a delicious cream tea. If cycling is your thing then there are miles of lanes, tracks and well maintained roads to explore but if you prefer 4 legs instead of 2 wheels then friendly Cholwell Riding Stables is also a 20 minute drive for great hacks out on the open moor. The coast is also very accessible for stunning beaches in North Cornwall or head south to Dartmouth for some great sea kayaking.
Lower Willsworthy Cottage has become like a second home for us where we instantly feel relaxed? We have no hesitation in recommending it for the perfect holiday in a peaceful setting surrounded by magnificent countryside, but we would prefer to keep it a secret really as it is such a special place"!

We love dogs at Lower Willsworthy. When your four legged friend(s) stays with us, they can expect to stay in what we like to call the 'Dog Cottage'. Many holiday cottages only allow 'one well behaved pet'. The beauty of the Dog Cottage is that we can easily accommodate up to 3 dogs (large or small), meaning that no one has to get left behind!
The Dog Cottage features a large indoor area and a large outdoor run. This is a perfect safe environment in which to leave your dog, should you wish to go out for the day and not have to worry about rushing back to let them out! There is also a large private garden to run about in, with a stream (for those dogs that like to get wet)!
Being situated on Dartmoor means we are perfectly placed for some great walks, that you and your dog are sure to enjoy.

Does riding get any better than this?

Our latest review! "The best rural retreat experience!!! You have your own cottage garden with an amazing babbling river brook flowing straight through it with bridges to cross and the dogs can roam free. The walks across the estate to the River Tavy provide breathtaking scenery and the surrounding land has endless rural paths to explore. Locally there is so much to visit and Tavistock is only 10 minutes away. Mike and Sophia were the perfect hosts and should be proud of their most wonderful home"

This week we gave a new home to four ex battery hens. Rhianna, Adele, Katy and Taylor, as they are now known, will spend the rest of their days enjoying a new life here at Lower Willsworthy. It has been wonderful watching them settle in and enjoy the sun on their face for the very first time!
If you have space in your garden and are looking into getting some feathery friends. I would highly recommend rehoming some ex battery hens. You can look at the British Hen Welfare Trust website for more information. http://www.bhwt.org.uk/

Our recent guests David & Yvette just had a very sporting weeks stay at Lower Willsworthy. Not only did they enjoy a spot of fishing on the river Tavy but they also partook in a spot of clay pigeon shooting. David and Yvette also brought along their two beautiful Springer Spaniels which they trained every day (putting my unruly Cocker Spaniel to shame)! Thank you to David and Yvette for this lovely photo of David fishing on our stretch of the Tavy.

It is always lovely to receive feedback from our guests. Here is our latest review:
"A perfect half term retreat. Thank you for making us feel so welcome & well taken care of in this beautiful holiday home; for the ride in the Kubota, tour of the grounds and extra touches in the cottage which made all the difference. The white roses in the window which were tight buds when we arrived are now dropping their petals so it must, sadly, be time for us to leave. We've had a wonderful week & take fond memories with us"
22 October 2014
Lower Willsworthy Cottage is a great base to explore Dartmoor from. Not only are we surrounded by Tors but we also have some great walks right on our doorstep. Explore the haunted Lych way, also know as the 'way of the dead', which just happens to run through our estate, or hike up to the breath taking Tavy Cleave (pictured).
Kountry Kit in Tavistock has all the outdoor gear you could possibly need to keep you warm and dry, whether it be for just walking the dog or to climb a mountain. It also boasts one of the largest ranges of outdoor footwear in the South West.
